The Western world faces an uncomfortable truth. Barbarism is pushing forcefully into civilized society. From mindless street violence and looting to the erosion of basic civic standards, the signs are everywhere. Many people feel the urge to fight back directly. They want to confront the chaos head-on, to stand their ground and push back against the tide. But here’s the hard reality - there’s almost certainly no upside to engaging in physical conflict with agents of chaos.

Ridicule has long been recognized as one of the most potent weapons in political discourse. Saul Alinsky, in his influential book “Rules for Radicals,” identified ridicule as Rule Number 5, stating that “ridicule is man’s most potent weapon.” He understood that mockery cuts deeper than argument, that laughter disarms opposition more effectively than rage, and that a well-placed barb can accomplish what a thousand earnest speeches never can. The strategic assignment of labels to political opponents represents a particularly effective form of ridicule.

The artificial intelligence revolution has a dirty secret. Across America, massive data centers are sprouting up like industrial weeds, and the communities forced to host them are paying a terrible price. What tech companies and politicians sell as progress is turning into an environmental and social nightmare for ordinary citizens. The Human Cost People living near these facilities aren’t just concerned. They’re angry, exhausted, and increasingly desperate. The problems are real and immediate.

One of my great blessings in having moved from Central Florida to rural northwest Tennessee has been in getting to know many of the young people here. With few reservations, I have found them to be a most remarkable - most industrious - lot. One characteristic that they all share is that none “came from privilege”. I’ve heard stories of mattresses having to be dragged out from back rooms every night just to have a place to lay down to sleep.
